How to turn off the voice control feature on any iPhone model, or switch it out for Siri

You can turn off the voice control feature on your iPhone using two different methods, depending on which iPhone model you have.Voice control is a feature on many iPhones that allows you to compose texts, turn on music, or access other iPhone features. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, Voice Control is accessed via the Home button, while on the iPhone X or later, it's accessed via the side button.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Voice control technology has helped to make life — especially when it involves our phones — a lot easier.

From helping you compose emails and texts hands-free, to calling people on your contact list, or even asking Siri for directions while out and about, the feature can make getting things done on-the-go simpler, and much more convenient.

However, not everyone is fond of voice control or finds it useful. Should you be in the latter group, disabling voice control on your iPhone is a simple process that can be completed in just a few clicks.

The process differs slightly depending on if you have an iPhone X and later model, or an iPhone 8 and earlier, but both methods are easy to accomplish. Here's how to do both.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Rolls-Royce is designing the 'world's fastest all-electric airplane' named ACCEL that can reach up to 300 mph

Rolls-Royce is designing what it hopes to be the world's fastest all-electric airplane that can reach up to 300 mph: the ACCEL, short for "Accelerating the Electrification of Flight."The aircraft's battery has enough energy to power 250 homes or fly London to Paris, about 200 miles, with one charge. The plane is scheduled to take flight in Great Britain in spring of 2020.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Rolls-Royce is designing what it hopes to be the world's fastest all-electric airplane that can reach up to 300 mph: the ACCEL, short for "Accelerating the Electrification of Flight."

The company is collaborating with the UK government, YASA, and Electroflight for the engineering feat. YASA is a UK-based manufacturer of "high-power, lightweight" electric motors and controllers for multiple applications, including cars and aerospace, while Electroflight is a startup focusing on bespoke electric powertrains.

"We're gaining the know-how to not only pioneer the field of electric-powered, zero-emissions aviation - but to lead it. At this point, our confidence is sky high," Rolls-Royce ACCEL Project Manager Matheu Parr said in a statement.

In order to follow the progress of the aircraft, its makers track 20,000 data points per second on the powertrain that provides energy to the propellers, all while monitoring the battery. The battery has 6,000 cells and a cooling system to meet the aircrafts demands while making it the "world's most energy dense flying battery park," according to Rolls-Royce. In short, it has enough energy to power 250 homes or fly London to Paris, about 200 miles, with one charge.

"We believe pure electric, or all-electric, propulsion will power smaller aircraft in the foreseeable future- while larger aircraft will rely on hybrid electric solutions that combine electrification with evolutions of the gas turbine," Rolls-Royce CTO Paul Stein said in a statement.

In a separate statement, UK Member of Parliament and Minister for Business and Industry Nadhim Zahawi said: "The electrification of flight has the potential to revolutionise the way we travel and transform aviation for decades to come – ensuring we can travel worldwide while maintaining a low carbon footprint."

Zero-gravity cookies and Santa space suits: Here's what it's like to spend Christmas on the International Space Station

There are often astronauts up in the ISS over Christmas.Despite being posted to a cramped space station, they still manage to celebrate Christmas with most of the traditional trappings. If they're lucky they get the day off as well.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

No one likes spending Christmas at work if they can help it, but sometimes there's just no getting out of it. For example, if you are stationed in orbit 250 miles above the planet.

But despite being as far away as it's humanly possible to get from Earth — where Christmas was invented — astronauts aboard the International Space Station manage to keep their workplace pretty festive. They festoon the station with decorations, put up Christmas trees, open presents, and even get Christmas dinner.

Here are some amazing moments from the many Christmases which have been celebrated aboard the ISS.

How Hilton, Marriott, and Walt Disney Resorts recycle and donate used hotel soaps

Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator: There's an episode of Friends where Ross and Chandler are checking out of a hotel in Vermont.

Ross: Could you have some complimentary toiletries sent up to my room?

Narrator: As Ross picks up his suitcase to leave, it bursts open and an avalanche of mini soaps and lotions comes tumbling out. It's admittedly a lot of stuff, but not compared to what's actually left behind in hotel rooms. So what happens to the toiletries that don't fit into Ross' suitcase?

Shawn Seipler used to stay in around 150 hotel rooms a year. One day, a thought hit him. What happens to all the half-used soaps he leaves behind? When he called the front desk to ask, they told him it all just gets tossed. So in 2009, he started Clean the World out of a one-car garage in Florida.

With a few friends, some potato peelers, meat grinders, and cookers, Seipler developed a way to recycle used bars of soap into new, sterile ones, which can then be donated to children and families around the world who don't have easy access to soap. That makes them susceptible to diseases like pneumonia and diarrhea, which kill almost 1.5 million children under 5 every year but can be prevented by handwashing.

Since 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 50 million bars of soap to people in 127 countries. The nonprofit initiative quickly outgrew the garage and now has recycling facilities in Orlando, Las Vegas, Montreal and Hong Kong. And it works with 8,000 hotel and resort partners, including Walt Disney World Hotels, Marriott, and Hilton.

Hilton joined forces with Clean the World in March 2019. In its first seven months, Hilton donated 2 million pounds of toiletries, which contributed to 7.6 million bars of recycled soap. But how do you clean the thing that does the cleaning?

Here's how it works. Starting at the hotel, staff members are trained on the collection and recycling process. Housekeeping collects the used bars and bottles and deposits them in special bins. The bins are then transported to one of Clean the World's recycling facilities. There the toiletries are sorted by product before entering the first stage of the recycling process.

For bar soap, it's first surface cleaned before going through a sterilization process that eliminates all pathogens. The sterilized bars are then ground up and put through a manufacturing line where they're remolded into new bars. Once they're boxed and loaded onto pallets, the bars are distributed to homeless shelters and organizations in the US and to people in need around the world.

Hilton has pledged to divert all of its soap from ending up in the trash by 2030. And Clean the World has kept 20 million pounds of hotel waste from polluting North American landfills since it was founded. Some hotels are starting to take a different approach to cutting down waste by eliminating single-use toiletries from their rooms entirely, instead opting for bulk offerings.

Clean the World knows that this is a possibility for its hotel partners as well. The plan would be to create new "impact products" like hygiene kits and corporate event packages to make up for the potential drop in production and revenue. As of now, Hilton hasn't decided to make the switch from individual to bulk toiletries.

So if you're staying in a Hilton hotel or another of Clean the World's partners, don't be like Ross.

Ross: Instead of taking one, I take six.

Narrator: Leave that stuff behind. Your twice-used soaps won't go to waste.

Correction: Hilton's partnership with Clean the Word began in 2009, not 2019. The data presented in the video reflects the first seven months of the Clean the World Challenge — a promise to donate 1 million bars of soap by October 15, 2019 (Global Handwashing Day). Insider regrets the error.

3 views on the future of meetings

Boeing safely landed its first CST-100 Starliner spaceship, named "Calypso," in New Mexico on Sunday. No astronauts flew aboard the Starliner. The mission was designed to show the vehicle, which NASA funded through its Commercial Crew Program, is safe to fly astronauts. But the Starliner suffered a major glitch with a clock shortly after launch, causing it to veer off-course.Boeing rescued the mission, which NASA officials said should achieve about 90% of its objectives despite not reaching its planned destination, the International Space Station. However, no one could say whether or not the company's next mission would be a redo of the uncrewed test flight or the first with astronauts riding inside.Sign up for Business Insider's transportation newsletter, Shifting Gears, to get more stories like this in your inbox.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Boeing and NASA officials seemed proud, and perhaps a little giddy, after the company's first new orbital-class spaceship, the CST-100 Starliner, landed with barely a scratch in New Mexico on Sunday.

"You look at the landing, it was an absolute bull's-eye. Better than, I think, anybody anticipated," Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator, said during a press conference that day. "That's good for the agency, it's good for Boeing, and it's good for the United States of America."

But just two days before, the autonomous spacecraft — which carried no people on its maiden flight — suffered from a critical timing error that, without intervention from mission control, likely would have ended with the loss of the uncrewed Starliner and its cargo of food and Christmas presents bound for the International Space Station.

More importantly, the Orbital Flight Test mission was designed to show NASA the spacecraft is safe to fly astronauts on a follow-up test flight, ostensibly planned for mid-2020.

"It's disappointing for us," Jim Chilton, the senior vice president of Boeing's Space and Launch division, said of the error just after launch on Friday.

Here's what happened during the historic mission and why both Boeing and NASA officials now, after landing "Calypso," as astronauts have named the space-worthy ship, seem surprisingly upbeat about its performance.

Amazon Music explains how it works with popular artists like John Legend and Katy Perry to create original holiday songs that top the charts

Amazon Music creates original content exclusively for its listeners year-round, but ramps up efforts during the holiday season. The company partners with artists like Katy Perry, John Legend, and Ellie Goulding who typically perform well on Amazon Music to create holiday songs that top the charts worldwide. Amazon Music works with artists to promote and share the songs, often releasing them to radio stations around the world after they debut on Amazon Music. The effort has paid off, with original holiday singles accumulating more than 100 million streams on the service worldwide so far this year.Click here for more BI Prime articles.

Amazon Music has a lot of competition when it comes to streaming, so it drives listening during the holidays by commissioning exclusive songs.

Amazon Originals releases music throughout the year but pays special attention to its holiday lineup, said Dan McCarroll, the head of artist relations and Amazon Originals at Amazon Music.

"Amazon is such a popular destination for the holidays in general, so for us it's just about trying to enhance that customer experience even more," McCarroll said.

Amazon Originals started commissioning holiday songs shortly after Amazon's Prime Music service launched in 2014, the company said. The first music created for Amazon Originals was geared toward the holidays, and included songs by Brandi Carlile, Yoko Ono and the Flaming Lips, and Liz Phair.

Amazon Music started ramping up the holiday originals in 2018 when McCarroll joined the company from Warner Bros. Records.

McCarroll and his team look at which artists with big fanbases have the most streaming success on Amazon Music throughout the year, then pitch partnerships for originals to those performers.

Katy Perry, for instance, is popular on Amazon Music, so Amazon Originals worked with Perry, her label, and management team to create "Cozy Little Christmas" for the streaming service last year.

Artists have creative freedom when partnering with Amazon Originals, McCarroll said, although the company works with them to create songs it thinks will resonate with Amazon Music listeners.

Amazon Music uses multiple platforms to promote its original holiday songs

Artists who work with Amazon Originals also have a say in how their music is released, so some choose to wide-release their songs after a brief period of exclusive availability across Amazon Music's three subscription tiers, McCarroll said.

Last year's Katy Perry song was eventually pushed out to other streaming services and radio stations, but hit No. 1 on Billboard's adult contemporary music chart while it was still exclusive to Amazon Music. Amazon also featured the song in its "A Voice is All You Need" ad campaign for Alexa.

This year, Amazon Originals worked with John Legend — whose Christmas album "A Legendary Christmas" sits at No. 27 on Billboard's top 200 albums chart — to create his reimagined version of "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)."

The song is only available on Amazon Music, although Amazon Originals has been working with Legend to promote it widely, McCarroll said. Legend recently performed the song live with Jorja Smith at the Global Citizen Prize award ceremony in London, and the performance aired on MSNBC in the US.

Legend has also shared Amazon advertisements for "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" linked to Alexa on his Twitter page, and Amazon Music's YouTube channel promoted the song to almost 33,000 subscribers with a video of Legend discussing what the song means to him and his experience recording it with his wife and daughter.

Amazon Music has seen these efforts pay off, McCarroll said, with its original holiday singles accumulating more than 100 million streams on the service worldwide so far this year.

Alexa is popular for holiday listening in the US, but some songs perform better internationally

Amazon Music promotes its originals with Alexa, and the voice assistant is also commonly used to stream holiday songs that are not exclusive to Amazon's streaming service.

There have been more than 100 million voice requests for holiday music in general on Alexa so far this year in the US alone, the company said. And since the beginning of December, holiday songs have been requested via Alexa thousands of times per minute on Amazon Music in particular.

Some of Amazon Music's holiday originals are performing well on music charts worldwide as well.

Ellie Goulding's cover of "River" peaked at No. 8 during its third week on the UK's "First Look" top 40 singles chart and is predicted to reach No. 1 by the end of Christmas week, according to Billboard.

Goulding's "River" cover is the second Amazon Original song to enter the UK top singles chart, the company said. "Cozy Little Christmas" was the first, and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" entered shortly after "River."

Goulding has performed the song live on BBC's Radio 1, and the music video has been viewed about 1.5 million times since its release in early December. The song is exclusive to Amazon Music but has been serviced to 13 radio stations including Radio 1, the company said.

McCarroll said keeping the songs exclusive to Amazon when they're first released but allowing artists to perform them live around the world works well for both parties.

"The artists love giving their fans something that's really special that you can just get on Amazon," McCarroll said. "It reminds me of being in a fan club, or being able to get specific pieces of vinyl, or something else that's really special for the fans."

Alarms do sound when your iPhone is on Do Not Disturb mode, as long as your alarm is set up properly — here's how to make sure

The Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone is a godsend for anyone who wants to eliminate the mundane chatter caused by your phone — notifications, group text messages, and so on.

But many iPhone users worry about whether their alarms will ring when Do Not Disturb mode is on.

Here's what you need to know to make sure it does.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Alarms do sound when your iPhone is on Do Not Disturb

Don't worry: If the alarm is on, your alarm will still ring when you're in Do Not Disturb mode.

That's reassuring, because you might want to turn on Do Not Disturb overnight, so your phone won't ring while you're in bed, but still set an alarm to wake you up at the right time.

The bottom line: As long as your phone is powered on, and the alarm is activated, alarms will ring no matter if the phone is set to Do Not Disturb, or even if the ringer switch on the side of the phone is toggled to Silent mode.

For more details on how to use Do Not Disturb, see our article "How to use Do Not Disturb on an iPhone to silence notifications and limit distractions."

How to correctly set an alarm so it will always sound at the right time

To make sure your alarm will sound, check that the alarm is turned on and a ringtone is selected.

1. Start the Clock app and then tap on "Alarm" at the bottom of the screen.

2. Make sure your desired alarm is turned on by sliding its button to the right.

Ensure your alarm is turned on or it won't ring. Dave Johnson/Business Insider

3. Double check the time of the alarm, paying particular care that the correct AM or PM setting is selected.

4. Tap "Edit" at the top left of the screen and then tap the alarm you want to check.

5. Tap "Sound."

6. Select the sound you want to use for the alarm — make sure you can hear it play — and then tap "Back."

Be sure you have a ringtone selected with a check mark, so the alarm will sound. Dave Johnson/Business Insider

7. Tap "Save" in the upper right corner.

Your alarm is now configured — it'll now ring regardless of whether you're in Do Not Disturb mode or not.

You've been charging your smartphone all wrong

All smartphone batteries have a limited lifespan, but the common habit of charging phones overnight could actually be shortening that lifespan, according to a battery-technology expert.Smartphone companies like Apple, Samsung, and LG aren't too bothered about whether you charge your phone overnight, and Google says most phones have systems in place to protect your phone's battery from overcharging. But at the end of the day, smartphone batteries still don't like being at 100% for too long.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you might be reducing your phone battery's lifespan with certain charging behaviors.

Specifically, if you often charge your phone overnight or keep it plugged in for hours after it's reached 100%, you're accelerating the aging process of lithium-ion smartphone batteries.

"If you're going to charge your phone to 100% and keep it at 100% — just keep on charging and charging overnight — this will have negative influence on aging," Dominik Schulte, the managing director of the German battery-technology consultancy firm BatterieIngenieure, told Business Insider.

Indeed, as a lithium-ion battery ages, the chemistry within changes and becomes less efficient at storing and delivering power to your device.

To be sure, all lithium-ion batteries age and have a limited lifespan. No matter what you do, your phone's battery capacity — which translates to its lifespan — will degrade as you use it. But you can have a say in how quickly your smartphone battery ages.

Meanwhile, the companies behind the smartphones in your hands and pockets don't seem overly concerned about you letting your phone charge for too long.

Check out what you need to know about charging your smartphone's battery:

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella run two of the most well-known and valuable companies in the world. But when it comes to the business of actually running their respective international business empires, the two execs have very different management styles.

Business Insider recently obtained an internal list of Nadella's leadership principles, drawn from the strategy that helped the company re-establish itself as a major market player. The company's market value has gone from about $300 billion when he took over as CEO in 2014 to some $1.2 trillion today.

Nadella's principles, which urges leaders to "create clarity" and "generate energy," are required reading for every new manager at Microsoft, and the subject of an online course at the company.

Bezos' principles – starting with the "customer obsession" that the company often talks about – are posted on Amazon's career website for prospective job candidates and anyone else to view.

By comparing the two documents, plus some additional insight from Nadella's professional memoir "Hit Refresh," it's easy to see the difference in how they approach the concept of business leadership.

How to add premium channels to YouTube TV including Showtime, Starz, and sports packages

You can add channels to YouTube TV on top of your base subscription, which already comes with 70 channels. You can add nearly a dozen additional premium channels, including a sports package, Showtime, Starz, and others — though each channel will cost you extra each month. To add or remove these channels, go to the Membership section of the YouTube TV Settings menu. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Though they have similar names, don't confuse YouTube with YouTube TV — the latter is a streaming television service that includes more than 70 live TV channels for $49.99 per month.

You'll get these 70 channels included with the base subscription price, but you can also add premium channels as well. You can do this when you start your subscription, or at any time afterwards.

Each premium channel — these include Showtime, Starz, and more — costs a little bit extra per month. The cost will be added onto your monthly YouTube TV bill.

If you've already set up YouTube TV, here's how to add or remove premium channels.

How to add channels to YouTube TV, or remove them

1. Open YouTube TV in a web browser.

2. Click your account avatar in the lower-right corner of the screen. If it slides up to the top of the screen, click the avatar a second time. In the drop-down menu, click "Settings."

You can add and remove premium channels using the Settings menu. Dave Johnson/Business Insider

3. On the left side of the Settings window, click "Membership." You should see a list of channels.

4. Scroll down the list and look for a channel you want to add or remove. When you find the channel, click the checkbox to add or clear the check. You'll see options like Starz and Showtime for shows and movies, or additional sports packages like NBA League Pass.

The number at the bottom will update to show how much your monthly YouTube TV bill will be after you make your changes.

Goldman Sachs leads $45M investment into auto fintech startup MotoRefi

ByteDance is rumored to be considering selling off TikTok stake, but the company told Reuters and confirmed to Business Insider that it had no plans to sell.TikTok is a short-form video app especially popular among Gen Z, and it has amassed 1.5 billion downloads.US lawmakers have expressed concern over possible national security issues, and TikTok has faced accusations of censorship at the request of the Chinese government.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

ByteDance rejected rumors that it is considering selling off stake in video app TikTok after Bloomberg reported yesterday that the tech giant was thinking about a sale. Reuters reported that ByteDance has no plans for a sale at this time. A ByteDance spokesperson told Business Insider in an email "There have been no discussions about any partial or full sale of TikTok. These rumors are completely without merit."

Bloomberg's report emphasized that no formal decisions had been made about the future of TikTok, but it reported that some advisors were suggesting a partial sale. ByteDance denied the sale in an internal memo to employees from TikTok head Alex Zhu, Reuters reported. In the memo to employees, Zhu called the Bloomberg report "inaccurate" and said that ByteDance did not have any plans to sell part or all of its stake in TikTok. "I want to assure you that we have had no discussions with potential buyers of TikTok, nor do we have any intention to," he said.

ByteDance is the highest-valued privately-held company in the world, worth an estimated $75 billion, and has been called "China's Facebook" for its size and ownership of popular social networking apps. It launched the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, in 2016, and the international version in 2017. Since then, it has been downloaded 1.5 billion times, and might even be gaining on Instagram and Snapchat in numbers of active users.

TikTok has faced criticism for its ties to China during its rise. In September, The Guardian reported that moderators on the app were instructed to censor content that could offend the Chinese government, including mentions of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests or Tibetan Independence. TikTok said that the policies were outdated, and that it now uses "localized approaches" to moderation.

US lawmakers have also been critical of TikTok as a potential security risk. In October, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida asked the Trump administration to investigate the app based on what he called "ample and growing evidence" of censorship at the request of China, while Sens. Chuck Schumer and Tom Cotton wrote a letter to the head of national security asking for an investigation into the app as a counterintelligence risk. Last week, the Navy banned TikTok from government-issued phones as a "cybersecurity threat."

In November, the US Senate held a hearing on technology and data security, and invited representatives from major technology companies, including TikTok. TikTok declined to send a representative. Earlier this month, Zhu said he planned to meet with lawmakers about their concerns over TikTok, but then canceled the meetings.

TikTok has made moves that suggest it is looking to expand its US presence and rid itself of legal trouble as a perceived security threat. The company is reportedly looking for a headquarters outside of China to move away from its image as a Chinese company. It has already started building up a Silicon Valley presence, moving into offices that used to be occupied by Facebook-owned WhatsApp, and hiring employees from Facebook, Apple, and Google.

Bootstrapped Entrepreneurship from Estonia: Lauri Kinkar, CEO of Messente (Part 5) - Sramana Mitra

In the last decade, scientists around the world pulled off impressive feats: They imaged a supermassive black hole for the first time, discovered new human ancestors, created groundbreaking new medical treatments, and launched probes to distant asteroids, comets, and moons.

Researchers also invented reusable rockets, sent two landers to Mars, and identified possibly habitable planets outside our solar system.

These and other accomplishments are improving scientists' understanding of human history, the planet, and the cosmos.

As 2020 — and a new decade — approaches, here's a look back at some of the most awe-inspiring scientific discoveries made during the last 10 years.

Read the pitch deck that buzzy startup Devoted Health used to reach a $1.8 billion valuation before it signed up a single customer

Devoted Health wants to change the way the U.S. takes care of its senior citizens, and it has big plans in its first five years to do just that.

The startup, which has been gathering lots of buzz in the last year, was founded to sell private health insurance plans to U.S. seniors, a market that is growing rapidly as Baby Boomers age.

Using one pitch deck, Devoted Health managed to secure $300 million from investors in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz late last year, with a valuation of $1.8 billion — all before it signed up a single customer.

But the deck also outlined the company’s aggressive plans for its first five years. Devoted Health planned to sign up 5,000 members for 2019 and grow that to 103,722 by 2023. It expects to make about $1.2 billion in revenue in 2023 while generating a small net loss.

Here’s what else Devoted Health laid out in the pitch deck:

How the company, in part, plans to make money by owning its own medical group in addition to the insurance operation Its plan to take on the healthcare giants in Medicare Advantage Why it thinks it can generate better margins than other Medicare Advantage health insurers How the company can eclipse 100,000 members And more about the company’s aggressive five-year plan

This little-known Android phone is one of the most exciting smartphones of 2019 — and it costs only $500

This year has marked a significant milestone for the smartphone industry.

We've seen market leaders like Apple and Samsung release new phones with triple-lens cameras, once again upping the standard for what's expected from high-end smartphones when it comes to mobile photography. The first truly foldable smartphones with flexible screens also made their debut in 2019 with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X, and the Motorola Razr.

You probably haven't heard of the Asus Zenfone 6, but it's just as exciting as those breakthrough devices in some ways. With a 48-megapixel camera that can flip up and swivel to accommodate multiple angles, it's further evidence that smartphone makers are willing to take risks on new designs that push the industry forward a little at a time.

It may not be the best phone you can buy, but the Zenfone 6 has a lot going for it that at the very least makes it stand out in a market dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Chinese giants like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo.

Plus, at $500, it's about half the price of the iPhone 11 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S10. The base model, which comes with 64 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM, is available for $500 through Asus' website or third parties like Amazon.

Here's a closer look at what it's been like to use the Asus Zenfone 6.

Fixing scratches on your car is simple — here's a step-by-step guide

I bought a new car over the summer and then endured a minor mishap, requiring a quick repair that I covered in this story.

I referred to scratch repair in that guide, so I thought I'd revisit my repair guide for less demanding fix-its.

Scratches are like the old torture of death by a thousand cuts. Eventually, they'll destroy your car's finish by allowing rust to develop on metal parts. And like the great Canadian poet said, rust never sleeps.

Neil Young references aside, a few years ago I suggested two ways to repair scratches. As I was dispensing this basic advice, it occurred to me that I had some scratches on my own car, a 2011 Toyota Prius, that needed attending to, certainly as winter arrived in the Northeast, where I live.

Back then, I took care of them. But I later decided to have another look at my ride. And sure, enough, there were some new nicks and scrapes to attend to.

Read on for a basic how-to for doing simple scratch repair:
